I think that's why this little beastie makes me smile; I don't find myself having to tweak the microphone gain controls to get things sounding right. It pretty much does what is needed; when I plug it in it is pretty much good to go. This is a $15 peripheral, so it needs to be evaluated in that context.

The microphone in the box from IBM is a condenser-type microphone, to my understanding. THese microphones need a smalll voltage to power them which most audio boards do not provide.
