REPOST: P5A-B microphone gain setting
How about this: a VCA on the microphone signal, which is driven by rectified, amplified and smoothed (time constant few hundred milliseconds) speaker signal. In other words, microphone gain is decreased always when the other subscriber with 'normal' phone is speaking.. Tried anything like this? Experiences? TIA!

I've tried the newest Creative Labs drivers, microphone gain settings, and various microphones to no avail. I have some friends having the same problem so it's not just an installation snafu. The sound card has an unbalanced input and the $50 RS mic. is basically a balanced mic. being wired in a unbalanced manor. The average sound card supplied with the average computer, will have a tendency to pick up internal system noise with the microphone gain turned up high. My question is this, I have a Yamaha

Toby, Sounds okay, but you can essentially do the same thing now simply by foregoing the K3's mic gain stage, ie ... mic -> black box -> K3 in -> ssb If either or both are in the K3's "mic gain" stage, that would make your suggestion that much more desirable. BTW, what exactly do you envision this black box

Does anybody know where the microphone is located to I can direct my voice to that spot? Thanks Steve- The IC-24AT seems to have a chronic problem with low modulation. It seems that the DM-1 does the mp3-music stuff (I don't care), while the DS-2000 has microphone gain control (I might care) and author-ID settings (I don't care). The DS-3000 has, on top of that, edit, overwrite, and partial erase features (I might care a lot) and more author-ID/work-type stuff (I don't care).

If your modem supports the IS-101 voice command set, the Speakerphone microphone gain is controlled with the +VGM-n command. On my modem, the range of values for n is 121-131. With the basic AT command set, you can turn off the speaker with the M0 command (that's "M zero", not "M letter O").
